December

December

Did you know that in December:

The winter solstice occurs on the 21st which is the shortest day with the longest night. This

marks the time when the days start to get longer.

There is little food around so birds search for berries while hungry mammals

will strip bark off trees.

Most insects will migrate or hibernate often tunnelling into the soil to avoid the winter

cold.

You may hear blackbirds singing to ward off rival males.

Holly and mistletoe bear their berries.

What to look for in December.

How many of these things will you see?

holly berries

mistletoe

teasel heads

bark nibbled by animals

an owl

Things to do:

Make a bird feeder

Why not feed the birds in your garden by

making a bird feeder. There are several

ways to do this, here are some websites

that you could visit to help you find one to

make.
